Kershaw County Records - WPA Transcripts
1791 - 1799
5 Aug 1799 BRYANT SPRADLEY for $100 from GEORGE WHITE 200 A part of 500
A granted to BRYANT SPRADLEY 7 May 1798 Kershaw County Howard's Branch
waters of Black River
He received an Indent for Revolutionary Service of selling beeves to the
Army. Samuel Mathis cashed the Indent of four Guineas at Camden 3rd day
of August 1783. Edward Blake and Peter Basquet, Commissioners of the
Treasury, Charleston, SC, checked this Indent.
B. Elmer Spradley entered the Sons of the American Revolution on the
service of Bryant Spradley.
On Nov. 6, 1786 Bryant Spradley received a grant of 640 acres on
Swift Creek as recorded in Grant Book 2222, page 6. Portions of this
land were leased in 1792 to Francis Martin, widow. This land bounded by
Bryant Spradley, John Chesnut, George Payne and Lamb Boykin (estate).
In the same Grant Book there was a grant of 500 acres to Bryan
Spradley and John Marshall on Dec. 16, 1786. Have not identified any
relationship to John Marshall.
The first US census for South Carolina in 1790 did not list Bryant
Spradley as a head of household. Either he was missed or he was with a
son or brother.

and either was missed or was with one of the following listed Spradleys:

Andrew Spradley, the younger was near the William Nettles family and
relatively near the William Payne family. Andrew Spradley, Sr was near
the Samuel Payne family. James Spradley, SR was near the John and George
Payne families as well as Samuel and Solomon Bradley families. The
Martin families were next to the Paynes.
There exists the possibility that Bryant Spradley, SR. was with Andrew
on page 396 since he is the only Spradley over age 45. If so that would
make the Andrew on page 492 the elder.
Article in the Camden Gazette in Camden SC stated the following.
ISSUE of OCTOBER 13, 1817
Departed this life on Wednesday last, Mr. Bryant Spradley Senr in
the eightieth year of his age. Mr. Spradley was born and always lived in
this Town or its neighborhood, and during his life never took a dose of
medicine or lost a drop of blood by the lancet. He never was confined a
day by sickness until he was attacked by the disease that terminated his
existence. Until a week before his death, he possessed the vigor, health
and strength that characterized his
youth; and was able to undergo labour and exposure that most young men
would sink under.
