M. Eliza was born about 1851 in Coosa Co., AL.1 M. Eliza's father was Thomas Calhoun, Sr. Shaw and her mother was Mahala Logan. Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Shaw and Elizabeth Finley; her maternal grandparents were Henry Logan and Martha Ann George. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Hugh, Thomas Calhoun, Jr., William James, Frank David, Elizabeth, Mary Catherine and Amanda. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
