[coosa1.ged] Mahala and Thomas's son Hugh Shaw, was the eldest son of Thomas and Mahala. He fought in the Civil War as did his father, Thomas, who was killed. Hugh was serving in the State of Mississippi at the end of the war when he came down with the Tyroid Fever. Nerar the point of death, he was taken into the home of Benjamin Taylor in Choctaw County near Stewart, Mississippi. He was nursed back to health by their daughter Betty. After his recovery from the fever, he and Betty were married. He stayed on in Mississippi after the war and worked at the Taylor's farm and sawmill near Stewart. In 1927, he returned to Alabama for a visit with his brother William J. Shaw. Hugh's last visit to relatives in Alabama was in 1930. He died at the age of 88.
