John Elbert Hinson 
John Elbert was born on November 4th, 1871 in Troy, Pike Co., AL.1 John Elbert's father was Mastin Asbury Hinson and his mother was Lucinda S. Rushing. His paternal grandparents were William Hinson and Martha Ann Pugh; his maternal grandparents were William Cain Rushing and Mary Ann Rushing. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Mastin, Thomas Martin, Joseph Richard, Jesse Cleveland, Carrie Lee Ola, Fannie Lou and Pollie. He was the third oldest of the eight children. John is buried in Resthaven cemetery (formerly Tech Memorial Park, which
is listed on his death certificate) in Lubbock, Texas. Before his death,
he was a farmer in Smyer, Texas.
John and Bobbie had 15 known children. According to family stories,
Bobbie actually gave birth to 17 children! (These were probably
stillbirths.)
John was a Primitive Baptist, and very conservative; he thought ladies
belonged at home - a true male chauvinist! He enjoyed being around people
and had a preference for maroon Fords. He also had a passion for
greyhound dogs and rabbit hunting.
John is described as approximately six feet tall, slender with blue
eyes, black hair (although very gray late in life), and predominately
heavy eyebrows. His thumbs were enlarged by rheumatism, but this is also
a family trait.
