It is said that Lewis G. Harding was riding horseback through Taylor, MS
when he saw Eliza Yancy in her yard. He was so taken with her beauty that
he stayed and spent the night. He lingered there and married her. They
inherited the Yancy homestead and had 11 or 12 children. The Yancy
property is located about 5 miles west of Taylor. Later it was known as
the Browning place. The Harding family cemetery is located there and
there are no markers.
1830 FEDERAL CENSUS--STAFFORD COUNTY, VIRGINIA (page 64, no township
listed): LEWIS HARDIN was listed in the census, here. (See family group
record for MARK HARDING.)
1830/1837: Sometime during this period, LEWIS G. HARDING moved to
Tennessee from Virginia (per Joan Goar Bratton). (He was listed in the
1830 Federal Census for Stafford Co., VA.) He met and married ELIZABETH
JANE YANCEY, probably about 1837, in Tennessee. By 1839, they had already
made the move to north Mississippi (see 1839 note, below), where their
second child was born, in December of that year. After ELIZA JANE YANCEY
died (in 1858), LEWIS HARDING later married JANE HESTER, who was ELIZA
Jane’s sister, on 2 Apr 1860 @@Lafayette Co., MS. (No children by this
marriage.) (Note: I have also heard that LEWIS G. HARDING mar 2 REBECCA
JOHNSON, and there were no children by this marriage. Need to prove.)
1843: LEWIS HARDING gave his father MARK HARDING power of attorney for
managing his share of his grandmother CLARKY HARDING's estate, including
his share of the slaves inherited from her.
