Somewhere about '37 or '38, we used to spend our summers at a watering
place, then known as "Limestone Springs" now the "City of Gaffney" on the
Airline Railway, and in the cottage we occupied were housed a number of
young men and boys, I believe to attend a school located there. Among
them was (a) nephew of my mother, Witten Taylor from Ala., one of my
father, George Ross, also of Ala. and a friend of the family Edward
Nesbitt. These young fellows were the special beaus of my cousin Sally
Ben Elmore and my sister Sally Frank Elmore.

I remember a grt. uncle, Col. Ben Saxon, who had some position in the
legislature and used to come to my grandmothers (Mrs. John Taylor) to see
us. The last time I remember seeing him was in our own home in
Charleston, about '46 or '47. I think he was on his way to Ga.

I had the pleasure many years ago of receiving Cousin Charlotte and her
husband Dr. Reid in our little home that my sister (Mrs. Breva Davidson
now) Cornelia and I were able to build, and where we taught school till
she married & I took charge of Cola. Academy.

Letter from Ellen S. Elmore to Marie Taylor Elliott Col. S.C. March 16-
/95
My dear unknown Cousin,
It is my fault, yet not my fault, that my sister's reply to you inquiries
has not reached you before this. My fault, which I acknowledge, is
explained by the fact that my sister brought her reply to me to overlook
before mailing, and I, believing I saw some errors, could not prevail
upon myself to send it without at least the endeavor to correct.
I sent the paper to another cousin, John Taylor, son of A.(lex) P.
Taylor, whose memory is clearer than mine, & whose opportunity of looking
into family & State Archives has been better, and he, being like myself a
very much occupied servant of the public, beside that he had to go off on
a family summons to Charleston, was unable to find the time to consult
these records for some of the points I thought in error. One was in
reference to the generation of the man for whom your grandfather & my
uncle, was named. Judge (or Dr. ) James Hunt Taylor (sic) was the
brother-in-law of Gov. John Taylor & not of his father, Col. Thos. Taylor
the S.C. progenitor of our Taylor family. I think John Taylor's paper
makes this plain.
You may safely trust to John Taylor's statements for they are always
well-considered, & based on positive knowledge. For other points you may
compare John's paper, a copy of which I enclose, and my sister's; and I
trust you will be able to draw from both all the data you require for
filling out your papers.
I can fully sympathize with you over your difficulties for when I
consented to join the Sisterhood, it was with the thought that I, if any
one, could establish my claims to belong to the august circle, but what
was my chagrin t
