His paternal grandparents were Bird Booker Spier and Mary Payton; his maternal grandparents were John Nelson and Sarah Y. Clark. He had three brothers and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Benjamin Booker, Thomas Jones, David Atlas, Patience Elizabeth, Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Agnes and Alabama Y.. He was the third oldest of the eight children.-
