His paternal grandparents were David Buchanan and Margaret Steele; his maternal grandparents were William Crawford and Rachael Titus. He had five brothers and eight sisters, named Baby Boy, William S, Andrew J, David C, Marcus T, Rachel T, Louisa, Margaret, Martha Jane, Rebecca Ann, Elizabeth P, Sarah Emoline and Mary Isabella.
