Her paternal grandparents were Richard de Clare Earl of Gloucester & Hertford and Maude de Lacy Cts de Lincoln; her maternal grandparents were Edward I Plantagenet and Alianore de Castille Cts de Ponthieu. She had two sisters named Alianor and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the three children. She had a half-brother named Thomas.-
