Sam was born about 1839.1 Sam's father was Joseph Boland and his mother was Magdalene Frick. His paternal grandparents were Abram Boland and Eva Christina Sease. He had five brothers and four sisters, named James Middleton, William A., Abraham M., Reubin T., Ruben T., Christine, Mary A. K., Emmaline and Nancy L.. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children. He had two half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Noah, Patrick, Edith A., Laura A., Jane C., Idella, Permelia A. and E. Alice.-
