Ellen Douglas was born on May 16th, 1878. Ellen Douglas' father was Thomas Mifflin Ladd and her mother was Sarah Mildred King. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mifflin Ladd and Lucy Elizabeth Cowardin; her maternal grandfather was Nathan King. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Bernard Goodall, Robert Hill, James Russell, Thomas Mifflin, Lucy Winston and Sarah Mildred. She was the third oldest of the seven children. She had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Edward Quarles, Walter Ira, Marion Calvin, Annie Elizabeth, Eva Frances, Ora Lou and Ota Lee.-
