Robert E. was born in 1846 in Shelby Co., AL. Robert E.'s father was George Richard Crowson Harless and his mother was Piety Butler. His paternal grandparents were Henry Harless and Margaret Basore; his maternal grandparents were James McGehee Butler and Candace Dicey. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Henry N., James Lafayette, John Thomas, Benjamin Franklin, J. M. L. Curry, William M., Elizabeth, Charlotte Y. and Mary Jane. He was the second oldest of the ten children.-
