Mary Jane was born on May 4th, 1862 in Shelby Co., AL. Mary Jane's father was George Richard Crowson Harless and her mother was Piety Butler. Her paternal grandparents were Henry Harless and Margaret Basore; her maternal grandparents were James McGehee Butler and Candace Dicey. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Henry N., Robert E., James Lafayette, John Thomas, Benjamin Franklin, J. M. L. Curry, William M., Elizabeth and Charlotte Y.. She was the second youngest of the ten children.-
