James H. B. was born in 1839 in St. Mary's Co., MD.¹ James H. B.'s father was Henry Hammett and his mother was Catherine Wise. His paternal grandparents were Richard Hammett and Nancy Biscoe. He had three sisters named Sophia, Eliza and Mary Celestia. He was the third oldest of the four children. He had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named William S, George A, Samuel Biscoe, McKelva, Washington and Anjaline R.
