James was born in 1788 in Leeds, Kent.  James' father was James BOULDEN and his mother was Catherine PATTENDEN.  His paternal grandparents were David BOULDEN and Sarah STANLEY. He had three brothers and two sisters, named David, George, Thomas Tonge, Ann and Sarah.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
