James was born in 1760 in Sutton Valence, Kent, England.  James' father was David BOULDEN and his mother was Sarah STANLEY.  His paternal grandparents were John BOLDING and Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Zebulon STANLEY and Sarah. He had five brothers and five sisters, named David, Thomas Tonge, John, George, William, Sarah, Jemima, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary.
