Peter was born in 1778 in Salisbury, , Iredell, North Carolina.  Peter's father was Julius Keeton and his mother was Rebecca Redford. He had nine brothers named Tobias Canton, Allen, Miles, William, John, Julius, Joshua, James and Joel.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
