James was born in 1785 in , , North Carolina.  James' father was Julius Keeton and his mother was Rebecca Redford. He had nine brothers named Tobias Canton, Allen, Miles, William, John, Peter, Julius, Joshua and Joel.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
