John was born in 1777 in , , North Carolina.  John's father was Julius Keeton and his mother was Rebecca Redford. He had nine brothers named Tobias Canton, Allen, Miles, William, Peter, Julius, Joshua, James and Joel.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
