Miles was born in 1776 in , , North Carolina.  Miles' father was Julius Keeton and his mother was Rebecca Redford. He had nine brothers named Tobias Canton, Allen, William, John, Peter, Julius, Joshua, James and Joel.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 69 in 1845 in Platte Co, MO.

They had two sons and four daughters, and also a child of unknown gender, named Alford, Sherrod, Clarissa, Molina, Milinda, Patsey and Unknown.
