Archibald's father was Archibald Hewitt and his mother was Janet White Robertson. His maternal grandparents were David Robertson and Mary Eaglesome Smith Frew. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Alexander, James, William, Jennie, Mary, Maggie, Dora and Alice. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
