Joseph BROWN

Joseph was born on September 30th, 1816 in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England and his baptism took place there on October 4th, 1816.¹²

Joseph's father was Joseph BROWN and his mother was Eleanor STAINTHORP. His paternal grandparents were William BROWN and Ann HUMBLE; his maternal grandparents were Francis STAINTHORP and Lucy SMITH. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William, Henry, George, Robert, John, Eleanor, Lucy, Francis and Mary Jane. He was the second oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 71 on September 10th, 1888 in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England.¹

General Notes
- Birth date taken from 1851 census and IGI Marriage. GRO ref:- Whitby 24 596 Dec 1/4 1838. This needs to be confirmed as I have just assumed from BMD that this is our Joseph Brown. Almost certainly correct though! Death. GRO ref:- Whitby 9d 289 Dec 1/4 1888 This also needs to be confirmed but as Joseph`s age at death was given as 72 yrs old I don`t think there is much doubt. In 1851 the family were living at 62 Church St and in 1861 they living in The Paddock. In the 1881 census Joseph is listed as being a Plumber employing 6 men and 2 boys and living at 8 Paddock, Ruswarp. source: the Shears Family Website
  1861 Whitby Census records Rachel Robinson (wife of Master Mariner), daughter, and Harry Robinson, grandson at the Brown residence in the Paddock.
