Gertrude Estelle was born on February 23rd, 1905.1 Gertrude Estelle's father was Charles Edward Carter and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Keahey. Her maternal grandparents were William A. Byrum Keahey and Isadora McGraw. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Garland Lee, Orman Guy, Ben Franklin, Francis Marion, Royal Lester, Eddie Marie, Doris Lavine and Nettie Marguerite.
