Martha Edlena's father was Tillaman Peurifoy Burgamy and her mother was Sarah Medora Fonville. Her paternal grandparents were John Burgamy and Martha Davis Peurifoy; her maternal grandparents are John Averette Fonville and Rachel Sloan. She has five sisters named Alma Gibson, Ella Peurifoy, Fanny May, Lillian Averette and Zuleika Theodosia.-
