Orlando F. was born on March 28th, 1821 in LaPointe Co.,IN. Orlando F.'s father was Edward Herndon Piper and his mother was Anna Blackburn. His maternal grandparents were William D. Blackburn and Elizabeth McClanahan. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William Chauncey, John B., Edward Herndon , Jr., James A., Ann Eliza, Margaret Jane and Sarah Elizabeth. FYI regarding Orlando F. Piper -- thought it might be interesting for you to know (if you don't already) that Orlando F. Piper was Indian agent for the Southern Apaches in New Mexico between 1871 and 1873. Although fairly successful with the administration of the agency, he wasn't much liked by the Indians (not many agents were). He was involved with such famous ones as Cochise, Loco and Victorio. He is mentioned in several books -- try Dan Thrapp, "Victorio" for some positive mentions. Don't happen to have any more info on him do you? bud shapard
Piper was agent for the Southern Apaches (Chiricahuas) and took the oath of office on October 28, 1870. The agency at that time was at Canada Alamosa -- renamed in the early 1900s to Monticello -- about 100 miles south of Albuquerque. After a long and complicated argument between the government and the Indians the agency and the Indians were moved to a place called at that time, Tularosa. The present day town is Aragon, about 90 miles to the north west of Monticello. Even today it is extremely remote. Although he did a fairly respectable job, for some reason the Indians disliked him -- I suspect since he was on some kind of religious appointment (the govt was hiring its agents at the time only after being recommenced by the church. Piper was Presbyterian) He may have been a bit too rigid and stogy for the heavy-drinking Apaches. Anyhow he was given an extended leave for health reasons with the recommendation that "one so faithful and worth as yourself." be offered something less arduous. I believe he left government service on November 8, 1872. Piper was about 59 when he took the job and his age may have played a part in his failure to win the Indians over. His family did not accompany him to New Mexico. Dealing with the Apaches was a particularly difficult and dangerous business during those years. Both of his sons were probably born by the time he left for NM in '70 -- his youngest is listed as being born in 1870 -- so if he saw him before he left for the west, the kid was just a baby. I have seen no records that he came back East to see the family during his stint with the Indian Bureau, until he left Tularosa, although he tried once in 1872 just before he "retired" from Tularosa. He made an effort to bring Cochise, Loco and Victorio with a few other Indians back to meet the President in D.C. It was a common ploy for Indian agents to bring a few chiefs back to meet poobahs in Washington and then drop by home on the way back, but Piper's effort failed because Cochise and Loco believed there was treachery in
