Reigned 1154-1189. Ruled an empire that stretched from Tweed toPyrenees. In spite of frequent hostilities with the French King, hisown family and rebellious Barons (culminating in the great revolt of1173-1174) and his quarrel with Thomas Becket, Henry maintainedcontrol over his possessions until shortly before his death. Hisjudicial and administrative reforms which increased royal control andinfluence at the expense of the Barons were of great constitutionalimportance. He introduced trial by jury. He was also Duke ofNormandy.
