Joseph Leonard Shields 
Joseph Leonard was born in 1851 in Monroe County, Indiana. Joseph Leonard's father was Joseph Lindsey Shields and his mother was Eliza Jane Whitsell. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Charles H., John G., James, David, George Washington, Mary E. and Sarah Cynthia. He was the second oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 71 on June 3rd, 1922 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried in Knight Ridge Cemetery, Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana.General Notes

Co., Indiana, at the time of the Census.
In 1920, Joseph and Cynthia were residents of Bloomington 8th Precinct,
Monroe Co., Indiana, at the time of the Census with Joseph's brothe,
James , living with them.
Joseph died on 3 June 1922 at Monroe Co., Indiana, cause of death was
listed as Cerebral Hemorrhage.
Joseph Leonard's obituary appeared on 5 June 1922 in the Bloomington
Daily Telephone, Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana, and it read;
"Joseph Leonard Shields, age 71 years, died today at 6 a.m. at his home
on north Jackson Street. He had been ill for the past year and on
Decoration Day suffered a severe stroke of paralysis which hastened his
death. Since the stroke came he had been unconscious and passed away
peacefully. He was the son of Joseph and Eliza Shields of Kentucky,
deceased. Besides his wife, Cinthy A. Shields, he leaves three brothers,
George, John and James of this city, and two sisters, Mary Trisler and
Sarah Meadows, also of this city. There are no children. Mr Shields,
though he has been in ill health for some time, was always kind and
helpful to his friends and relatives and many will mourn his loss. He
regularly attended the Knight Ridge Church and took a great interest in
its affairs. He was born in Indiana whence his parents moved and made
their home soon after their marriage. The funeral services will be held
at the Knights Church, Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. John Hays officiating.
Internment at Knights Ridge cemetery."
