John G. was born in September 1858 in Indiana. John G.'s father was Joseph Lindsey Shields and his mother was Eliza Jane Whitsell. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Shields and Sarah "Sally" Masterson. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Charles H., Joseph Leonard, James, David, George Washington, Mary E. and Sarah Cynthia. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 74 on March 30th, 1933 in Monroe County, Indiana. He was buried on April 2nd, 1933 in Knight Ridge Cemetery, Salt Creek Twp., Monroe Co., Indiana.-
