Elizabeth was born on October 3rd, 1793 in , Halifax, North Carolina. Elizabeth's father was John Gordon and her mother was Anna Haynes. Her paternal grandfather was John Gordon; her maternal grandparents were Francis Bythell Haynes and Anne Bell. She had six brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Thomas, William, Joseph, George Haynes, Nancy Ann, Mary Margaret, Elizabeth, Lucy and Sarah. She was the third youngest of the twelve children.-
