Elizabeth was born on August 12th, 1781 in , Halifax, North Carolina. Elizabeth's father was John Gordon and her mother was Anna Haynes. Her paternal grandfather was John Gordon; her maternal grandparents were Francis Bythell Haynes and Anne Bell. She had six brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Thomas, William, Joseph, George Haynes, Nancy Ann, Mary Margaret, Lucy, Elizabeth and Sarah. She was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.-
