Robert was born in 1883 in Fremantle Dist.. Robert's father was John (Urn) Urwin Howson and his mother was Caroline George.  His paternal grandparents were Robert (Spinaway) Howson and Jane Ann Urwin. He had four brothers and a sister, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Frederick, John, Harold, Arthur, Elsie and <Unknown>.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
