John, known as Urn, was born in June 1863 in Monkwearmouth, Durham.1  Urn's father was Robert (Spinaway) Howson and his mother was Jane Ann Urwin.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Howson and Jane Dankin. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, Alfred, Edward and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Edmund, William, Henry, <Unknown>, Eva, Olive, Adeline and Gladys.  He died at the age of 75 on January 3rd, 1939 in Mosman Park.  He was buried in Fremantle (Methodist).2
