Mary was born in 1861 in New Zealand.1   Mary's father was Robert (Spinaway) Howson and her mother was Jane Ann Urwin.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Howson and Jane Dankin. She had five brothers named Thomas, Urn, James, Alfred and Edward.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named Edmund, William, Henry, <Unknown>, Eva, Olive, Adeline and Gladys.
