Gladys was born in 1896 in Fremantle.  Gladys' father was Robert (Spinaway) Howson and her mother was Amelia (Emma) Briggs.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Howson and Jane Dankin. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Edmund, William, Henry, <Unknown>, Eva, Olive and Adeline.  She was the youngest of the eight children. She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Thomas, Urn, James, Alfred, Edward and Mary.
