John was born on July 12th, 1790 in Arbroath, Angus, Scotland and his baptism took place there on July 19th, 1790. John's father was Dr John Mudie and his mother was Mrs Margaret Baxter.  His paternal grandparents were Mr William Mudie and Mrs Margaret Mann. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named David, George, Henry, Margaret, Elizabeth, Alison, Mary, Jean, Anna, Isabella and Catherine.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children. He had two half-brothers named Patrick and William.  He died  due to Spasmodic Cholera at the age of 34 on January 10th, 1825 in Berhampore, West Bengal, India.
