Elizabeth's father was Dr John Mudie and her mother was Mrs Margaret Baxter. Her paternal grandparents were Mr William Mudie and Mrs Margaret Mann. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named John, David, George, Henry, Margaret, Alison, Mary, Jean, Anna, Isabella and Catherine. She was the second oldest of the twelve children. She had two half-brothers named Patrick and William.
