James was born in 1741 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on July 5th, 1741.  James' father was Mr Alexander Gibson and his mother was Mrs Elizabeth Johnston.  His paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, Alexander, Anna and Isobel.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
