Anna was born in 1739 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and her baptism took place there on January 14th, 1739.  Anna's father was Mr Alexander Gibson and her mother was Mrs Elizabeth Johnston.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Alexander, James and Isobel.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
