George was born in 1735 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on August 3rd, 1735.  George's father was Mr Alexander Gibson and his mother was Mrs Elizabeth Johnston.  His paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, James, Anna and Isobel.  He was the oldest of the five children.
