Isobel was born in 1743 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and her baptism took place there on August 28th, 1743.  Isobel's father was Mr Alexander Gibson and her mother was Mrs Elizabeth Johnston.  Her paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Alexander, James and Anna.  She was the youngest of the five children.
