Alexander was born in 1736 in Slains, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and his baptism took place there on September 28th, 1736.  Alexander's father was Mr Alexander Gibson and his mother was Mrs Elizabeth Johnston.  His paternal grandparents were Mr James Gibson and Mrs Jean Cuming. He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, James, Anna and Isobel.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
