Jean was born in February 1928.  Jean's father was Joseph P. Kennedy and her mother was Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald.  Her paternal grandfather was Patrick J. Kennedy and her paternal grandmother is Mary Augusta Hickey; her maternal grandparents are John F. Fitzgerald and Josephine Hannon.  She had four brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, John, Bobby, Ted, Rosie, Kick, Eunice and Patricia.  She is the eighth oldest of the nine children.

Stephen and Jean were married on May 19th, 1956 in St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York.  They had two biological sons named Stephen and William.  They also had two adopted daughters named Amanda and Kym.
