Edward, known as Ted, was born in February 1932.  Ted's father was Joseph P. Kennedy and his mother was Rose Elizabeth Fitzgerald.  His paternal grandfather was Patrick J. Kennedy and his paternal grandmother is Mary Augusta Hickey; his maternal grandparents are John F. Fitzgerald and Josephine Hannon.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, John, Bobby, Rosie, Kick, Eunice, Patricia and Jean.  He is the youngest of the nine children.

Ted and Virginia were married in 1958.  They were divorced in 1982.  They have a son and two daughters, named Edward, Kara and Patrick.
