Benton was born in 1849 in Lewis County, Tennessee. Benton's father was Addison J. Webb and his mother was Wilmouth Griffin Harder (Webb). His paternal grandparents were John Webb and Elizabeth A. Mayfield (Webb). He had three brothers and five sisters, named Allen, William, George, Mary, Martha, Harriet, Louisa and Emily. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
