Helen was born in 1908 in Missouri. Helen's father was James David Rickman and her mother was Ida Nora Purdy. Her maternal grandparents were Smiley Albert Purdy and Susan Drucilla Webb (Purdy). She had three brothers and a sister, named Max, Harold, James and Rachel. She was the third oldest of the five children.
