Harold was born in 1907 in Missouri. Harold's father was James David Rickman and his mother was Ida Nora Purdy. His maternal grandparents were Smiley Albert Purdy and Susan Drucilla Webb (Purdy). He had two brothers and two sisters, named Max, James, Helen and Rachel. He was the second oldest of the five children.
