Jan was born in 1655 in Brakel and his baptism took place there on February 25th, 1655.1 2   His godfathers were Adriaen Teuniszn Coijman, Jan Janszn van Willigen and his godmother was Grietje Jan Barentsdr. Jan's father was Jacob Janszn Huibertszn van Willigen and his mother was Emmetje Jansdr N.N..  His paternal grandparents were Jan Huijbertszn van Willigen and Geurtje Jansdr Blanken. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Willem Jacobszn, Huijbert Jacobszn, Gijsbert Jacobszn, Jacobjen and Aagje Jacobsdr.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had four half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Jan Jacobszn, Adriaen Jacobszn, Jan, Hendrick Baijenszn, Anneken, Teuntje Jacobsdr, Anneke Baijensdr, Marijken Baijensdr, Catalijn Baijensdr and Jenneke Baijensdr.
