Arien was born on December 31st, 1801 in Aalburg and his baptism took place there on January 3rd, 1802.1  Arien's father was Cornelis Verhagen and his mother was Pieternella van Wijk.  His paternal grandparents were Arij Verhagen and Anneke Kameraad; his maternal grandparents are Gijsbert van Wijk and Maria van Kuijk. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Arien, Maria, Teuntje, Gijsbertje, Anneke, Bartieaantje, Bastiaantje and Pieternella.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 70 on December 29th, 1872 in Wijk en Aalburg.2
