Jan was born on September 20th, 1793 in IJsselstein and his baptism took place there on September 25th, 1793.1 2  Jan's father was Cornelis Otterspoor and his mother was Cornelia Hoogendoorn.  His paternal grandparents were Johannes Pieterszn Otterspoor and Willemijntje van Rooyen; his maternal grandfather was Pieter Hoogendoorn and his maternal grandmother is Sandertje Ververs. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Pieter, Pieter, Cornelis, Sander, Willemijntje, Willemijntje, Pietertje and Sannetje.  He was the oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Barent Dirkje, Kaatje, Antonia and Cornelia.  He died at the age of 51 on May 7th, 1845 in IJsselstein.1
