Peeter was born in 1763 in Loon op Zand and his baptism took place there on May 12th, 1763.1  Peeter's father was Dirk van der Leij and his mother was Dingena Hommel.  His paternal grandparents were Wouter Goverdszn van der Leij and Dorothea Petersdr de Rooij; his maternal grandparents were Michiel Jacobszn Hommel and Jacomijna Willemsdr de Geus. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Wouter, Magiel, Jacomijna, Dingena, Doora and Jacoba.  He is the fourth oldest of the seven children.
